A new meta-analysis, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, shows that 27% of individuals with ADHD end up having issues with cannabis use.
Among them, 19% were dealing with it when the data was collected.
Compared to those without ADHD, folks with ADHD are almost three times as likely to have problems with cannabis.
This association may not be causal, however. Some researchers suggest that people with mental health conditions like ADHD may self medicate with cannabis to reduce their symptoms.
Higher risk
The study, led by Anna M. Froude and her team, looked at how common cannabis issues are among those with ADHD and compared estimates from different studies.
They found that people with ADHD have a higher risk of developing cannabis use problems than those without the disorder.
Research shows that using cannabis a lot is associated with problems with thinking, mental health, and learning, among other things.
This includes a higher risk of developing cannabis use issues, where someone struggles to control their use and it affects their life negatively.
Again, these associations may not be causal in nature.
Moderate use of cannabis has little association with these issues.
Treatment?
